Unless your business is just going to jog along, you need a Strategic Plan, which looks at the Big Picture of your business, starting with where you are now, setting out where you want to be in the medium to long term (5 to 10 years), and what you will need to do to get from one to the other. A Strategic Plan should not be confused with a Business Plan which is much more detailed and looks at short to medium term (1 to 5 years) goals.
A Strategic Plan will likely include an analysis of the internal and external business drivers, probably developed from a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis; a Vision Statement setting out clearly where you want the business to be in the medium to long term; the major goals that need to be achieved if you are to realise the Vision Statement; the key actions needed to attain those goals; and the resources in terms of premises and equipment, staff and finance likely to be required.
Often those involved in running a business are too close to the action to formulate a Strategic Plan or, if they had one in the first place, to ensure that they are still on track to achieve it. Involving us in your strategic planning can have major benefits by ensuring that the SWOT analysis is adequately prepared, that there is sufficient "buy in" to the Vision Statement from key personnel, and that the implementation of the major goals is adequately resourced and is achievable. Furthermore, on an annual basis, we can revisit the Strategic Plan with you to monitor progress or to flex the Plan to reflect changing circumstances.
